Match report
Equatorial Guinea took a 1-0 victory over Sierra Leone in the second round of the African Nations Cup qualifiers on Sunday. The result came after a match where the hosts managed to keep their side in it despite sitting behind in possession. Lorenzo Zúñiga Owono opened the scoring in the first minute, and that proved to be enough.
And here's the thing about that early goal — it set the tone for everything that followed. Sierra Leone tried to find an answer, but by then the momentum had shifted. The visitors brought more attacks but never got going in the final third. Shots off target accounted for nine of their attempts, while the hosts kept their heads when it mattered.
Substitutions came thick and fast after the hour mark. Santiago Eneme and Dorian Hanza both came on for Equatorial Guinea in the 62nd minute, while Sierra Leone responded with Alie Conteh and Tyrese Fornah. The visitors also saw Alpha Turay brought on in the 82nd minute, but the game had already been decided.
To be fair, the statistics tell a strange story. Sierra Leone enjoyed 61 per cent possession and registered 82 attacks compared to the hosts' 72. Yet the visitors managed zero shots on target — not one attempt found the wayward goal. Equatorial Guinea, meanwhile, hit two shots on target and scored once.
The result leaves Equatorial Guinea with something to build on after recent setbacks. Their last outing ended 2-0 against Congo DR, and before that a 1-0 loss to Comoros. Sierra Leone's recent form has been mixed too, with a 2-3 defeat to Zimbabwe on their most recent outing.
