Polonia Bytom and Ruch Chorzów played out a 0-0 draw in the First League's ninth round on Friday evening. The result leaves Polonia fourteen on nine points while Ruch remain seventh with twelve. Neither side managed to break the deadlock despite a full ninety minutes of football. By then the temperature had dropped and the pitches were playing tricks on the ball.
The opening minutes belonged to Polonia, who pushed forward with more purpose. A. Coscia picked up a yellow card in the third minute for a sharp challenge, and that set the tone for what followed. Ruch came back through K. Orlik, who also went into the book at 41 minutes. To be fair, both cards felt inevitable in a derby with no love lost between these sides.
Polonia started to dominate possession but could not find a way through. They registered 110 attacks against Ruch's 69, yet only three shots found the target. Ruch were more efficient with four on target from fewer attempts. The statistics tell you nothing about where the game was won or lost — it was in the spaces between them.
Substitutions began in the second half as both managers looked for something. M. Rosol came on for Polonia at 46 minutes, followed by P. Stefanski at 65 and P. Szwedzik at 70. Ruch responded with K. Orlik off at 75, and the double change for Polonia at 80 brought on A. Coscia and K. Rostek. L. Zielinski was the final substitution for Ruch at 83 minutes.
We had given Polonia a 41 per cent probability of victory before kickoff. The match refused to go that way. They had the ball, they had the territory, but they could not get in behind Ruch's back line. And here's the thing — sometimes a team simply cannot find the final pass.
The result changes little in the table. Polonia remain in the lower half with a goal difference that does not inspire confidence. Ruch hold their position with three wins, three draws and three defeats. Both sides will take a point, though neither would have called it a night of success.
