Match report

Forward Madison edge Portland Hearts of Pine in USL League One

Forward Madison came away with a 2:1 victory at Portland Hearts of Pine on Saturday evening in the USL League One group stage. The visitors had scored twice through R. Carmichael and D. Gonzalez, while H. Karamoko's opener for the hosts was not enough. J. Kamara was sent off in the second half, and that shifted the balance of the contest.

Karamoko gave the home side the lead at the 21-minute mark, and he had another chance at 29 minutes when he missed a penalty. That was a moment that stayed with me — the way the crowd reacted, the tension in the stadium. Forward Madison responded through Carmichael in the 57th minute, and Gonzalez sealed it with 87 minutes gone. Kamara's red card in the 81st minute changed how the game played out.

Portland Hearts of Pine controlled possession at 58 per cent, but Forward Madison were more clinical. The visitors registered eight shots on target against two, and their accuracy rate of 53 per cent told the story. The hosts had 129 attacks to 107, but the numbers don't capture everything. Three yellow cards and one red card for the home side contrasted with three yellows for the visitors.

The result keeps Forward Madison in third place on 44 points after 24 games, while Portland Hearts of Pine remain 15th with 23 points. The visitors had drawn their previous match 1:1 with Greenville Triumph, so this win extended their momentum. Portland Hearts of Pine are looking for consistency — their last five games include two wins, two draws, and one loss, but they've not found the rhythm they need.
