Raków Hold Firm Against Hammarby in Scoreless Draw
Raków Częstochowa and Hammarby played out a goalless draw in the UEFA Conference League third qualifying round on Thursday evening. The Polish side hosted the Swedish visitors at their home ground, and neither team could find a breakthrough despite several opportunities. And here's the thing — it wasn't for lack of trying from either camp.
N. Persson saw yellow before the half-hour mark, brought up in the twelfth minute. F. Tudor came off for Raków in the twenty-fifth, an early change that suggested some caution from the hosts. By then, the match had settled into a measured rhythm, with both sides probing but not pressing too aggressively.
The second half produced a flurry of movement. J. C. Silva and V. Lind were both substituted for Hammarby in consecutive minutes, sixty-fifth and sixty-sixth. M. Ameyaw collected a yellow in the seventy-third, and F. Winther followed eight minutes later. M. Karlsson joined the action in the seventy-ninth, while N. Persson was finally replaced in stoppage time.
Hammarby edged possession at 0.52 to Raków's 0.48, but the numbers tell only part of the story. The Swedes registered six shots on target against five for the hosts, yet neither side could convert. Attacks tallied 73 to 68 in favour of the visitors, and corners went 6-5 their way. To be fair, the difference was marginal.
What this means for both clubs is a step forward in the qualification battle, but nothing decisive. Raków arrive with mixed recent form — a heavy defeat to Śląsk Wrocław on Sunday, but also a 4-0 victory over Valletta. Hammarby showed vulnerability against Anderlecht, losing 1-3, though they have drawn twice in their last three fixtures.
The tie remains open, and both managers will take something from a competitive performance. The high line wasn't picked apart, and neither keeper was asked to make a match-saving intervention. The stadium fell silent by the final whistle, but there was no sense of disappointment — just the knowledge that more work lies ahead.
