Sputnik Almetievsk secured a 3-1 victory over Reactor at the home rink on Monday evening in the MHL. The result keeps both sides level on zero points after four games each, though the visitors sit fourth while the hosts have dropped to seventh. Not much to separate them in the standings, but the gap in confidence is wider than the numbers suggest.
Reactor had looked solid enough in their opening fixtures—beating Avto 3-2 and taking a narrow win against Sputnik on September 10th. But Sputnik had other ideas this time. They carved them open when it mattered, and Reactor simply couldn't find a way back. To be fair, the hosts started brightly enough, but the visitors sensed blood and turned it into something more.
We had backed the home side for this one, giving Reactor a 64 per cent chance of winning. The forecast didn't materialise, and it wasn't for lack of opportunity early on. Reactor will need to work out what went wrong. They had the deeper squad on paper, but depth doesn't matter if you can't hold your shape. By then, the clean-sheet run will be long gone, and the real questions will surface.
