Sputnik Almetievsk exists to send players to Ravil Yakupov worked through the club's system across three seasons, from 2020/21 to 2022/23, before stepping up to the Vysshaya Hokkeinaya Liga and, from there, to Ak Bars Kazan in the KHL.

The team took its current name in 2011, replacing Neftyanik-2, and was admitted to the Junior Hockey League (MHL) system in July 2012, entering its second tier, the MHL-B. A bronze medal followed in that division in the 2012/13 season; the Kharlamov Cup, the MHL's main prize, has stayed out of reach. Sputnik functions as the farm side for HC Neftyanik Almetievsk in the VHL, sharing both its administration and its website with the senior club.

Daniil Arkhipov has held the head coach's post since 2024, working with a squad that includes forwards such as Vilien Taziev and Egor Levagin.
