Match report
Aston Villa beat Sevilla 3-1 in a club friendly on Thursday evening in Seville. The visitors took control early and never looked back, finishing with a comfortable victory.
I watched the whole thing from the stands. By then you stop looking at the scoreboard and start watching the shape. Villa moved between the lines with a calmness that doesn't always show up on paper.
Ivan Romero gave Sevilla hope with a goal in the 53rd minute, but the visitors responded quickly. Ross Barkley scored on the hour mark, then Alejandro Garnacho added a second before the break ended. Marc Jenner sealed it in the 83rd minute.
The substitutions came in waves. Villa made four changes at half-time, bringing in L. Agoume, T. Abraham, E. Buendia, and B. Kamara. Sevilla followed with five changes in the second half, including Peque and Joao Gomes.
Here's the thing about the numbers. Both sides registered 50 per cent possession. Villa had 89 attacks to Sevilla's 81, and both teams won five corners. The shots didn't tell the full story, and they rarely do in friendlies.
Sevilla had lost their last friendly against Barcelona 3-1, while Villa had beaten Tottenham 3-2 in their most recent outing. This result puts the visitors on a better run, though the friendly record means little beyond preparation.
