Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán

The Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán opened on 7 September 1958 with a match between Sevilla and Real Jaén, replacing the old Estadio de Nervión as the club's ground. Construction had begun years earlier, but the works ran well beyond the opening: the initial 78 million pesetas budget doubled, and the stadium was not fully finished until 1975 — seventeen years after the first ball was kicked there.

For most of its history it held far more people than it does now. At opening, capacity ran past 70,000, and the ground reached that mark on 21 December 1968 for a match against Real Betis, the highest attendance ever recorded there. The number came down in stages: a roof went up over the main stand for the 1982 World Cup, plastic seating replaced the terraces in the 1990s, and the ground settled at its current capacity well below its original scale.

Two mosaic panels mark the stands, the first installed in 1982, a second added in 2005. The most recent overhaul ran from 2015 to 2017, when the club replaced the seating throughout in red. Locally the ground is known as La Bombonera de Nervión, a nod to its shape rather than any resemblance to the Buenos Aires stadium the name borrows from.
