Sevilla FC

When football arrived in Andalusia still carrying its English vocabulary, the club took its first name straight from that source: Sevilla Foot-ball Club, spelt the English way, on 25 January 1890. The Spanish version didn't arrive until 1941, when the name became Sevilla Fútbol Club. It swung back to a hyphenated compromise in 1975, then settled for good only in 1992 — a hundred years of a club unsure, on paper, whether it belonged to English football's founding language or to the city it played in.

The city itself never had room for a rival born of the same roots. Other Seville clubs of that era folded into what became Real Betis; Sevilla FC never merged with anyone. What survived instead is the derby between them, still called El Gran Derbi , played with the kind of edge that comes from two clubs sharing one city and no history of ever being on the same side.

Home is the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, holding 42,714 under the club's red and white. The trophy room leans heavily on one competition: five Copa del Rey wins spread from 1935 to 2010, and a run in the UEFA Europa League — titles in 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020 and 2023.

The domestic league has been less generous.
