Eleven league titles sit in the club's cabinet. The Europa League has come round three times since 2010, and there is an Intercontinental Cup from 1974.

The club started life in 1903 as a Madrid offshoot of Athletic Club de Bilbao, and only became independent in 1907. What followed was a run of enforced name changes: a 1939 merger with the air force club Aviación Nacional, then a shortening under Franco's ban on foreign words, before the current name, Club Atlético de Madrid, was settled on in 1946. The red and white stripes trace back to that Bilbao connection.

None of it separates Atlético from Real Madrid, whose derby has run since 1906 and passed 286 meetings. It grew out of a divide as much social as sporting, Real drawing from the city's middle and upper classes, Atlético from its working-class districts, and that history outlasts any single scoreline.
