Sichuan Junqiu beat Chongqing Tongliang Long 2-0 in the Superleague's regular season, round 21, on August 2nd. The hosts took all three points despite surrendering possession to their visitors, and here's the thing — they made their chances count. Jiang Zhipeng opened the scoring in the 63rd minute before Wesley Moraes added a second in the 76th.
There was a moment in the 68th minute when Moraes saw his penalty saved, a chance to double the lead that slipped away. By then Sichuan had already taken control, and the missed spot-kick did little to dent their momentum. Moraes turned to the kids — or rather, to himself — and found the net eight minutes later from open play.
The statistics tell a story of efficiency over dominance. Sichuan managed just 45 per cent possession yet registered seven shots on target compared to Chongqing's one. The visitors had more of the ball, 55 per cent, but their 20 per cent shooting accuracy meant those chances went begging. Five saves from the Chongqing goalkeeper kept them in the game for longer than the scoreline suggested.
Two yellow cards were shown, L. Dimata for Chongqing and Li Ning for Sichuan, both in the closing stages. Sichuan committed 23 fouls against 16 for their opponents, and the pressure eventually told. The hosts saw it out with a substitution in the 90th minute, A. Ademi on for the final few minutes.
Before the match Sichuan sat 11th with 28 points from 26 games, while Chongqing occupied ninth place on 31 points. The result extends Sichuan's unbeaten run to two games after a difficult patch that included losses to Wuhan and Tianjin. Chongqing's draw streak continues, but this time they had nothing to show for it.
