Chengdu calls itself Hibiscus City, and when the local investment group put a football club together in 2018 out of the wreckage of Chengdu Qbao, it adopted a neutral name.
Runners-up in the Chinese Champions League in 2018, runners-up in China League Two in 2019, both good enough to go up, and then the promotion play-offs of 2022, where they saw off Dalian Pro 2–1 on aggregate to reach the Chinese Super League for the first time. Fifth in the debut season, third in 2024 and third again in 2025, which brought AFC Champions League Elite football. Twice in those two years they went out at the semi-final stage of the Chinese FA Cup.
Seo Jung-won took charge in 2021, when the club was still in the second tier, and stayed until 2025. He also had Elkeson, the former China international striker, from 2023 onwards. John Aloisi inherited the job in 2026.
