Vegalta Sendai and Consadole Sapporo shared the points at Yurtec Stadium on Saturday, finishing 1-1 in the J-League 2 regular season. The match went to its full time with neither side able to find a winner, which perhaps tells you something about how evenly matched these two really were on the day. To be fair, the table doesn't quite reflect that — Sendai sit third with eleven points after six games, while Sapporo languish in nineteenth with just four.
The opening goal came in the twenty-second minute when S. Omori found the net for the hosts, and by then you could already sense the pattern. Four minutes later, H. Takeda struck back for Sapporo, and suddenly you had a match that wasn't going to be straightforward. S. Kido picked up a yellow card in the twenty-fourth, which seemed premature unless you'd been watching closely.
What stuck with me was how both sides created chances without really threatening. Sendai managed three shots on target compared to Sapporo's three, but neither side managed to create a big chance all game. By then, the game had settled into something predictable — attacks and counters, nothing more. The statistics show 96 attacks for Sendai, 98 for Sapporo, and yet both sides registered zero big chances created.
Substitutions started coming in earnest around the hour mark, with H. Shirai and T. Hasegawa both off for Sendai in the sixty-second minute. The visitors made their changes in the sixty-eighth, bringing on H. Iwabuchi and S. Araki. M. Uchida received a yellow card at that stage, and from then on the game was mostly about managing the draw.
What matters most here is that Sapporo, who have lost four of their six games, showed enough to avoid defeat against a side that had won three and only lost once. Sendai dropped points they might have taken, but then again, they'd just lost 3-4 to Fukushima United in their previous outing. The result keeps Sendai in the upper reaches of the table, while Sapporo remain where they are — not exactly fighting for survival yet, but certainly not comfortable either.
