Man Utd ban 685 season ticket holders over touting

Manchester United have banned 685 season ticket holders following an investigation into touting at Old Trafford, the club confirmed ahead of Sunday's derby against Manchester City.

United identified 1,617 accounts showing "unusual activity" in August. Of those, 499 bans were upheld by an independent appeals panel, 113 account holders failed to respond to requests for information and 73 did not appeal. A further 468 cases were resolved once holders explained the activity, with no sanction imposed.

The club said in a statement: "Bans were issued where there was significant misuse of the ticketing system for financial gain. This included the operation of organised ticketing networks, which were controlling, selling and distributing tickets from hundreds of accounts. These actions undermine fair access to tickets for genuine supporters and have no place at Manchester United."

United said the revoked tickets will go to fans on the season ticket waiting list.

The club also acknowledged it had misjudged the scale of a separate practice, admitting it "did not anticipate the extent" to which supporters had shared account passwords "in circumstances they regarded as legitimate." Where no further evidence of misuse turned up, those cases closed without punishment.

The findings have not settled the row. Fan group The 1958 has called a protest before Sunday's kick-off, arguing sanctions were handed down without "compelling evidence" and that "a line has been crossed." United sources have pushed back, saying some accounts of the crackdown circulating on Social media are inaccurate, and that the investigation drew on the strongest data the club has gathered on its ticketing platform, covering activity between March and June.

That gap between the club's off-field turbulence and its opponent's league position adds an odd backdrop to a fixture that, by all accounts, was already set to be overshadowed by the protest outside the ground.
