Manchester United and Bayern Munich Rout Champions League Rivals

Manchester United put four goals past Sabah without reply as the Champions League's league phase opened, and Bayern Munich were almost as ruthless, scoring five against Bodø/Glimt in a match the Norwegian side finished without goalkeeper Nikita Haikin, forced off with injury.

Como were the other side to run up a cricket score, beating RB Leipzig 4:1.

Fenerbahçe's evening ended in a 1:1 draw with Roma, and coach Kartal used it to announce he was stepping down. The club's president has not accepted the resignation, so for now Kartal stays in charge.

Deadline day in the Russian Premier League

The summer window closed with Spartak's headline deal falling through. Samorodov's move from Akhmat, worth 650 million roubles, collapsed on the final day. It came days after Carcedo's Spartak had beaten Rodina 3:1 in the Fonbet Cup, a win built on fringe defender Saus rather than any new arrival.

Dinamo did their business early and often: 7 million euros for Gutierrez from Independiente, plus Auxerre winger Casimir on loan. Lokomotiv paid 125 million roubles for Titkov from Baltika. Khlusevich left Spartak by mutual termination and signed for Rostov. Zenit loaned Degtev out to Orenburg.

The league's disciplinary committee was busy too. Dinamo forward Tyukavin was banned for two matches, one of them suspended, for "aggressive behaviour" after his red card against Spartak. Lunev and Leshchuk were fined 30,000 roubles each and given a one-match suspended ban over a chant aimed at Spartak.

Spartak's window will be judged less on what was signed than on what was not. A 650-million-rouble forward walking away on deadline day leaves a gap Carcedo will have to manage with the squad already at his disposal.
