Arteta Slams Penalty Decision Despite Arsenal Win

Mikel Arteta could barely bring himself to celebrate a 2-0 win at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, so incensed was he by the penalty referee John Brooks awarded Sunderland midway through the second half.

Arsenal were held at 0-0 when Brooks judged Ezri Konsa to have fouled Dan Ballard, a former Arsenal defender, in the box from a corner. The decision survived a VAR check. David Raya dived low to his left to save Enzo Le Fee's spot-kick, and two minutes later Bruno Guimaraes drove a shot in off the bar to break the deadlock. Bukayo Saka added a second from the penalty spot deep in stoppage time to make it four straight wins and send Arsenal top of the Premier League with 12 points from four games.

Guimaraes only arrived at Arsenal last month and was scoring his first goal for the club. Saka, 79 goals into his Arsenal career since 2020, settled the contest with his spot-kick after Sunderland had failed with theirs.

None of that softened Arteta afterwards. Asked by TNT Sports about the penalty, he did not hold back.

Arteta, who picked up a yellow card during the match for stepping outside his technical area, said he had watched the incident repeatedly to be sure of his view before speaking. Raya, who also denied Brian Brobbey late on, said the save had given his team-mates belief.

Arteta's complaint centred on the manner of the Challenge rather than the outcome, since Arsenal survived it and went on to win comfortably. If similar decisions go the other way against a team unable to produce a match-winning save, the row over standards at this level of officiating will not end with one post-match interview.
