Daniel Maldini failed a breathalyser test following a car accident in Milan, where two cars collided, hours after he had scored the winning penalty in Cagliari's 2-1 win away to Atalanta.
Maldini had been driving his Porsche Carrera. According to news agency ANSA, his first breathalyser reading came back at 0.91mg/l and the second at 0.89mg/l, marginally above Italy's legal limit of 0.8mg/l. Police confiscated his licence and further blood tests are due at the hospital, which will also check for other substances.
Six people were hurt in the collision, five of whom, including Maldini, were taken to hospital for observation; the sixth was treated at the scene. Three ambulances attended. Among the injured were two women, aged 20 and 22, and three men aged 19, 20 and 21. Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
His lawyer, Danilo Buongiorno, said Maldini was released after being examined.
"Daniel is fine and has no injuries," said Danilo Buongiorno.
He has scored once for his new club and was part of the squad that won the Serie A title in 2021/22, before moving on this season. He is the son of Paolo Maldini and turns 25 next month.
