Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Neymar's Brazil career is over, telling CNN Esportes the decision to walk away from the Selecao came from the player himself.

"He deserved his place. He has confirmed he does not want to return to the national team. Neymar cannot be replaced because he was an extraordinary and unique talent. So, an irreplaceable player," said Ancelotti.

Brazil went out of the 2026 World Cup in the Round of 16, beaten 2-1 by Norway. Neymar, 34, scored from the penalty spot before Erling Haaland turned the tie for Norway. He made only two substitute appearances at the tournament after a string of fitness issues, and afterwards told Globoesporte TV: "I tried and tried. It's over now. I started here and finished here."

The forward leaves the national side with 130 caps, 80 goals and 59 assists, and without the World Cup winner's medal that eluded him throughout his career. He returned to Santos in February on a deal that has yielded eight goals so far this season.

With Neymar's international retirement now settled, Ancelotti and national team director Rodrigo Caetano have signalled the start of a broader rebuild of the Brazil squad as the next World Cup cycle gets under way.
