Haaland hails 'monster' Donnarumma after derby win
Haaland's goal and a late Donnarumma save gave ten-man Manchester City a 1-0 derby win over Manchester United amid VAR controversy.
Erling Haaland called Gianluigi Donnarumma a "monster" after the Manchester City goalkeeper’s stoppage-time save preserved a 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
City had gone down to ten men after 23 minutes, when Phil Foden was sent off for kicking out at United captain Bruno Fernandes. Haaland put City ahead in the 60th minute, though the goal survived only after a lengthy VAR check with a City forward standing in an offside position. The PGMOL later admitted that allowing the goal to stand had been an "error of judgement".
United threw everything at a City side reduced to ten men. Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo both struck the post either side of half-time, and Enzo Fernández hit the woodwork for City at the other end. The closest United came to an equaliser arrived in the 95th minute, when Fernandes found Bruno Fernandes unmarked in front of goal. Donnarumma got across to divert the shot away and keep the three points for City.
It was Haaland’s ninth in a Manchester derby, closing the gap on Agüero’s record of 12.
City survived. The save won them the match.
