Gasperini: Roma's Perfect Start Came Faster Than Expected

Gian Piero Gasperini expected Roma’s 2026–27 start to take longer.

Roma sit joint top of Serie A with a perfect record from four matches and the best defensive line in the division, just one goal conceded. Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Gasperini put the run down to continuity from last season's finish rather than a sudden leap: the squad has been together longer, he said, and knows itself better than it did at the same point twelve months ago.

He was asked whether that form points to a Scudetto challenge and pushed back on the framing. Raising the bar, he said, is not about setting a target that sounds ambitious on paper; it comes from working on the group day by day. He added that Roma still have flaws, and that spotting them is harder now that the obvious ones have been cleared out.

Gasperini pointed to unity between the squad, the fans and the club as the biggest asset built so far, describing the surrounding environment as a source of confidence rather than pressure. He said he had brought the same professionalism that has followed him through his career and feels it is appreciated in Rome, driving him to repay that trust.

The fixtures now toughen. Roma face Inter, who have also won all four of their opening league games, before an away trip to third-placed Como after the international break and then a Champions League visit from Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid the following Wednesday. Gasperini said the club expects the predictions. ‘You face reality as it comes, every year.’

Right-back Wesley, who has scored five times for Roma since joining in August 2025, has been a constant in that unbeaten run. How Roma hold up against Inter and then Real Madrid in successive weeks may say more about the scale of this start than the table does now.
