Tottenham slip into relegation zone after Villa defeat

Tottenham lost 3-2 at home to Aston Villa on Saturday and head into the international break in the relegation zone, still without a Premier League win after five matches.

Villa managed by Unai Emery had also made a slow start to the season, but goals from Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and Emi Buendia were enough to see them home at the Tottenham Stadium and collect their first league win of the campaign. Conor Gallagher pulled one back for Spurs late on, and Jan Paul van Hecke added a second with a header, but the goals came too late to matter.

Spurs started brightly but could not find the net. In first-half added time, with captain Micky van de Ven off the pitch receiving treatment after a challenge from Tyrone Mings, Manzambi tapped in from close range to put Villa ahead.

Jackson doubled the lead in the 67th minute, and Buendia's strike from distance with 11 minutes left settled it. Gallagher's finish in the 87th minute and van Hecke's header in stoppage time were the only late reward for a Tottenham side booed off by their own supporters.

Spurs sit in the bottom three, with only five home league wins in their last 36 matches at the stadium. The defeat followed a midweek Carabao Cup exit to Liverpool, and by all accounts patience with Ange Postecoglou is starting to wear thin after a summer of heavy spending on the squad.

The break offers a chance to address a run that has brought no wins and, until Saturday, no goals at all in the league.
