John Egan seals new Hull City deal

The 33-year-old defender has signed a two-year contract, completing his return to the Premier League after a serious Achilles injury.

John Egan has signed a new two-year deal with Hull City this month, capping a turnaround that has taken the 33-year-old defender from the Championship bench back to the Premier League.

Eighteen months ago Egan was struggling for minutes off the bench at promotion-chasing Burnley. He made a January move to fellow Championship side Hull City instead, and has not looked back. He has now played five league games for the Tigers this season, whose return to the top flight has caught most observers by surprise.

Egan probably thought his last Premier League appearance had already come. Playing for Sheffield United against West Ham in September 2023, he was taken off on a stretcher with a season-ending Achilles injury that kept him out for close to 10 months.

He made 208 appearances across six seasons at Sheffield United, winning promotion with the club in 2019 and again in 2023, and was named club captain that summer. His contract expired in 2024 and the Blades chose not to renew it, leaving him to fight his way back from the injury without a club.

The rebuilt career has also brought Egan back into the Republic of Ireland squad.
