Amorim's exit cost Manchester United £8.2m, Milan saved £8.5m

Manchester United paid £8.2m to dismiss Ruben Amorim in January, and the bill would have been £16.7m had Milan not hired him this summer. The accounts show the club saved £8.5m on the remainder of his contract.

The £8.2m severance covered Amorim and his staff, Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido, Emanuel Ferro and Jorge Vital. Amorim had 18 months left on his deal when he went. It sits among the exceptional items for the year to June 2026.

United reported a net loss of £43m for that year, up from £33m the year before. It is their seventh straight annual loss.

Revenue moved the other way. According to Business Wire, as reported by Euro-Football.ru, the club took in a record £677.6m, against the previous high of £666.5m. That came without European football. United attribute the improvement to lower costs, a smaller workforce and a better league campaign: they finished third in the Premier League and are back in the Champions League.

The new season has been slower. After five rounds United have 5 points and sit 12th. Amorim, by contrast, was on the touchline at San Siro on 16 September for Milan's Europa League league-phase opener against SL Benfica.

If revenue holds near this level and severance costs drop out of the next set of accounts, the loss may narrow. That depends on the Champions League income the club has not had this year.
