Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga and La Liga demand FIFA reform

The Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga and La Liga will release a joint statement calling for governance reform at FIFA.

According to Sky Sports, the four top European clubs leagues plan to demand greater independent oversight and a meaningful role for stakeholders in decision-making. They are not yet calling for the resignation of Gianni Infantino, but the move adds to the pressure on the president.

Reports say the main grievance is the expansion of the international match calendar. The leagues argue that decisions are being made without wide consultation with the national championships. Infantino has faced criticism for a blocked plan to sell a 20 per cent stake in commercial rights to private investors.

UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF have already called for changes in leadership.

FIFPro says key decisions are taken voluntarily, with consultations merely indicated. The leagues are targeting the procedure that controls the international calendar, which is signed until 2030.

This may mean the FIFA presidency becomes more unstable as the club leagues unite against the federation’s direction.
