Harry Kane: Argentina defeat hurt more than any England exit
England captain Harry Kane says the World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina hurt more than his 2022 penalty miss, as England prepare to face Spain at Wembley.
Harry Kane has called England's 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat by Argentina the most painful exit of his career, worse than the penalty he missed against France in Qatar in 2022. The England captain, who has since turned 33, said the manner of the loss was the reason.
England went ahead in the 55th minute and then barely touched the ball. The Independent reports that they had 12 per cent of possession over a 36-minute spell after Thomas Tuchel switched to a back five.
Kane did not watch the final on 19 July, according to the Independent.
England meet Spain at Wembley on Saturday night in the Nations League. Kane said he is still working through the Argentina game, and that the turnaround leaves little room for it.
If England are to answer the questions Kane raised about their record against the strongest sides, Saturday gives the first chance to show a different approach against a team that sits top of the World Cup table on 7 points. This may mean the result matters less to Tuchel than the way England go about it.
