Valencia appointed Javier Aguirre after a week of talks, fresh off leading Mexico to the last 16 at the 2026 World Cup; he'll be presented on 28 September.
Valencia have appointed Javier Aguirre as head coach, the club announced on Tuesday, ending a week of negotiations with the Mexican after his spell in charge of Mexico at the 2026 World Cup, where the side reached the last 16.
Aguirre's contract runs to the end of the current season, with an option for a further year that activates automatically if Valencia reach the Europa League. He is due to be presented to the media at Mestalla on Monday 28 September.
Born in Mexico City on 1 December 1958, Aguirre arrives with a long record in Spanish football. He has managed Osasuna, Atlético de Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganés and Mallorca, taking Osasuna into the Champions League among his best-known achievements in La Liga. Abroad, he has coached in Japan, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, won the Liga MX title with Pachuca in 1999 and the CONCACAF Champions League with Monterrey in 2021. With Mexico he won the Copa Oro in 2009 and 2025 and the CONCACAF Nations League in 2024-25, and this is his third World Cup in charge of the national side, after 2002 and 2010.
Aguirre will start working with the squad during the international break, preparing for his first match in charge when the league programme resumes.
