Cristiano Ronaldo: I will reach 1,000 goals, not an obsession

The 41-year-old Portugal forward stands on 979 career goals and wants the record badly, while also targeting the Nations League under new coach Jorge Jesus.

Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, says he will reach 1,000 career goals and wants the record badly, though he denies it has become an obsession. "I know I will get there, but it is not an obsession. The main thing is to enjoy playing, but yes, I very much want to set this record," the Portugal forward said.

He stands on 979: 833 for clubs and 146 for Portugal. That leaves 21. Of the club total, 13 have come for Al-Nassr since he joined in January 2026.

"Both. My aim is to achieve both. The 1,000 goals and winning the Nations League. This is a new era, and Martinez's work deserves high praise, in a foreign country and despite all the attacks on him. Now we are coached by Jorge Jesus, whom everybody knows, and I am sure things will turn out well," he said.

The remark on Jesus comes days after Ronaldo was called up for four Nations League fixtures, against Wales, Norway and Denmark. He remains Portugal's record scorer and caps leader.

If he keeps scoring at the rate he has managed for Al-Nassr, the 1,000 would be a matter of seasons rather than months. Portugal's Nations League games, the first under Jesus, may give an early indication of how many of those goals come for the national side.
