Cristiano Ronaldo won't retire from Portugal after 2026 World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo has decided not to retire from Portugal after the 2026 World Cup, and says he has spoken to the federation about it. The 41-year-old told Record he weighed his future carefully and consulted federation president Pedro Proença and head coach Jorge Jesus. He concluded that his experience and form still allow him to be of use to the national team.

Ronaldo said he can help with goals and by supporting the younger players. He described himself as ready for any role: starting, coming off the bench or staying in reserve. He also said he is in the squad because of his current club form, not past achievements. The Al-Nassr forward has scored 13 goals since joining the club in January 2026.

Portugal called him up again on 19 September for four Nations League matches against Wales, Norway and Denmark. He remains the side's record scorer and caps leader.

The national team is a separate matter from the club season. In August Ronaldo hinted that this campaign could be his last as a professional. The Touchline quotes him on the subject: "" Record reports that he wants to leave behind what he called a "huge legacy".

If he plays on for Portugal after the World Cup, the end of his career may not coincide with the end of this season, whatever he decides about his club.
