Mats Rots on life in Heidelberg and the house he shares with his brothers
Netherlands youth defender Mats Rots explains why his brother Tiem now lives in the Groenlo home he bought with Daan before leaving FC Twente for Heidelberg.
Mats Rots bought a semi-detached house in Groenlo with his brother Daan last year, then left FC Twente for the German student town of Heidelberg soon afterwards. The back, now with the Netherlands youth side, told Voetbal International he had a fair idea at the handover that he would never live next door to his brother.
The outlet bills him as "the man of 16 million". Speaking at the Jong Oranje base camp, he said he is not much of a phone person and prefers messaging, or better still, seeing people in person. Friends and family are now about four hours' drive away, and his time on the phone has gone up. "I don't think I could get away with not letting them hear from me at all," he said with a chuckle. Most of the calls are to or from Daan. The two played together in the FC Twente first team last year.
"Still, buying a house is always a good investment, I think," the youngest Rots said. "It's in a good spot in Groenlo, which is in quite high demand, so I could always have rented it out."
It went to their middle brother instead. "After my transfer I told him he could live in it," Mats said. "Daan is in his house by now, Tiem is busy furnishing. He's delighted with it. So soon we'll have two Rots brothers living next to each other after all. Just not me."
