Cody Gakpo returns to Liverpool for ankle assessment

Cody Gakpo will miss the rest of the international window and return to Liverpool for assessment after hurting his left ankle in the Netherlands' 2-1 win over Serbia.

The forward went off after 17 minutes. Sasa Lukic caught him with a heavy challenge and Gakpo tried to run it off before he had to stop. The Netherlands coach said the ankle would be examined on Monday and that he hoped it was not serious. Liverpool said Gakpo will play no part in the Dutch side's remaining two fixtures and will be seen by the club's medical staff at the AXA Training Centre.

He is the second Liverpool forward to leave an international camp early.

Potter said the problem is not serious, but that with so many matches in a short space of time Isak would not play. Neither club nor country has given a timescale for either player.

Both have started the season well. Gakpo has 2 goals and 4 assists in 6 appearances in all competitions.

Liverpool host Manchester City at Anfield on 11 October. If Gakpo and Isak are both ruled out, this may mean Liverpool go into that fixture with only one senior forward available.
