Lamine Yamal stuns Wembley with early strike

Lamine Yamal scored two minutes into Spain's match against England at Wembley, opening the scoring with a piece of skill his club, Barcelona, have grown used to seeing this season.

The 19-year-old right winger has now scored twice since his call-up to the senior Spain side in March. Wembley is regarded as one of the game's oldest stages, and by all accounts the timing of the goal only added to the impression it left.

On the same day, at the other end of a career, Lionel Messi scored his 931st goal, from a free-kick for Inter Miami. The Argentine, 39, retired from international football earlier this month after 125 goals in 21 years with the national team, so the tally now breaks down as 672 for Barcelona, 125 for Argentina, 102 for Inter Miami and 32 for Paris Saint-Germain. Messi's side sit third in Major League Soccer with 46 points from 27 matches, with Luis Suárez on 13 goals and Germán Cabrera on seven behind him this season.

Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, spent the full 90 minutes on the bench as Portugal drew with Norway, without playing a single minute. Portugal sit second in their World Cup qualifying group on 5 points from three matches, three behind Argentina's group, where Messi's former side lead on nine points from three games. Ronaldo remains the leading scorer in the history of the men's game with 979 goals and has scored three of Portugal's goals in this qualifying campaign, but an unused place on the bench against Norway was unfamiliar territory for a player who has built his career as his side's frontman.

Three weeks on, his club form shows no sign of slowing, even as his international story has closed.
