Maksim Mitrofanov has been re-elected general secretary of the Russian Football Union (RFU). The executive committee took the decision on Wednesday, 30 September, at a meeting held by video conference, extending his term to 4 October 2030.

The candidacy was put forward by RFU president Alexander Dyukov. The committee set Mitrofanov's new term to run from 5 October 2026 to 4 October 2030 inclusive.

Mitrofanov, 44, first took the post in October 2022, having served as acting general secretary from three months earlier. His RFU career goes back further: he joined the union in 2015, working as deputy chairman of the committee for security and supporter relations and as executive secretary of the football development programmes committee, before becoming deputy general secretary from April 2019 to July 2022. Earlier still, from 2007 to 2017, he was general director of Zenit St Petersburg.

The reappointment comes three days after Russia's national side beat Iran 2:0 in a friendly in Kazan, in a squad managed by Valeri Karpin.
