About the player
Alai Ghasem was born in Gothenburg, the son of an Iraqi father and an Algerian mother, and came through BK Häcken's academy before moving to IFK Göteborg, where he won the U19 championship with the club in 2021. He made his first-team debut for IFK Göteborg in March 2022 against Norrby IF and later that year played his first Allsvenskan minutes against IK Sirius.
Ghasem holds Swedish citizenship by birth but chose to represent Iraq internationally. He was capped at senior level for the first time in September 2022, starting the full match against Oman aged 19, and has gone on to make nine appearances for the national side without scoring. He also featured twice for Iraq's under-20 team.
In 2024 he left Sweden for Newroz SC in Iraq. Örebro SK signed him in November 2024 on a three-and-a-half-year contract, with the move taking effect from the start of 2025. He now plays as a right-back, wearing number 2, for a club competing in Superettan.
