About the player
Alexandru Ioniță made his senior debut for Rapid București at 16, in May 2011, before a move to Astra Giurgiu in January 2014. Astra paid €700,000 for him, and he repaid the fee with four trophies, including the Liga I title in 2015–16.
CFR Cluj signed him in January 2018 for €1 million, after Astra had refused to renew his contract and dropped him from the first team. The Cluj years were unsettled: loan spells took him back to Universitatea Craiova in 2019 and then to Astra Giurgiu again in 2020–21. In September 2020, the Romanian Anti-Doping Agency banned him for a year over intravenous vitamin injections, a sentence reduced after he cooperated with the investigation.
He returned to Rapid București as a free agent in September 2021. He also won a single senior cap for Romania, debuting against Kazakhstan in September 2017.
In February 2024, Ioniță moved abroad for the first time, joining Yunnan Yukun. He scored eight goals in 30 appearances as the club won the China League One title and secured promotion to the Chinese Super League, where he now plays as an attacking midfielder wearing the number 10 shirt.
