About the player
Afonso Assis made his first appearance for Moreirense's senior side in 2025, and the opponent was Porto. He had signed his professional contract in January of that year, after six seasons inside the club's academy.
Assis joined Moreirense in 2019, having been born in Guimarães, and moved up through the juniores ranks without changing clubs. The left-footed midfielder finished the 2024/25 season with 14 appearances across all competitions, 13 of them in the Portuguese league, though only five of those came as a starter. His goal that season was scored against Estoril Praia.
The following campaign brought a more settled role. By May 2026 he had played 18 league matches in 2025/26, with a goal and an assist.
International recognition arrived in September 2025, when Assis received his first call-up to the Portugal under-20 squad for a series of friendlies. He had made two appearances for that team by May 2026, without scoring.
In March 2026 Moreirense announced that Assis had extended his contract with the club until June 2030.
