About the player

When Andre Blake went down injured in 2024, Philadelphia Union turned to a 18-year-old academy product. Andrew Rick had joined the club's academy in 2016 and spent 2022 and 2023 with Philadelphia Union II in MLS NEXT Pro, making 19 appearances in his final season there before signing his first professional contract on 4 May 2024 under the league's Homegrown rule — the 23rd player in club history to do so, on a deal running through 2028 with a club option for 2029.

His first-team debut came in a 2-0 defeat to Charlotte FC, hardly the ideal start. But within his first six senior appearances he produced a performance that stood out: seven saves and a man-of-the-match award in a 5-1 win over New York City FC. He has also shown composure from the penalty spot at both ends of the pitch, featuring in a 12-round shootout in MLS NEXT Pro and then, in May 2025, making the decisive save in a 5-4 U.S. Open Cup shootout win over Indy Eleven.

The 2025 season brought a wider team success, with Philadelphia Union winning the MLS Supporters' Shield for the regular-season title, and a personal landmark for Rick. On 10 May 2025, aged 19 years and 100 days, he set up a goal against Cleveland Monarchs to become the youngest goalkeeper in MLS history to record an assist.

Rick has also faced a goalkeeper he grew up idolising. He came up against John McCarthy, a former Union goalkeeper he supported as a boy and once played alongside in the FC Europa youth league, in a match after McCarthy had moved on from Philadelphia.

At international youth level, Rick has represented the United States at both under-19 and under-20 level, with two caps for the U-19s in 2024 and one for the U-20s in 2025.
