About the player
Carlos Jair Gruezo Chamorro's career took an unusual detour before it properly began. He came through the Independiente del Valle system and stayed on the first-team books through 2021 and 2022, yet according to club records never made a single appearance for the senior side in Ecuador's top flight. A loan spell at feeder club Independiente Juniors in 2022 produced just one outing, in the Ecuadorian Cup.
In January 2023 he joined Venezuela's Metropolitanos as a free agent, making his debut that February against Universidad Central. Over the following season he featured in four league matches and four in the Copa Libertadores. He left Metropolitanos as a free agent in January 2025, moving the same day to Libertad in Loja, Ecuador, on a deal running to the end of 2026. Since then he has become a regular fixture there, appearing in 14 Liga Pro matches in 2025 and a further 12 in the current campaign.
Listed alternately as a centre-back and as a midfielder depending on the source, Gruezo wears the number 5 shirt for Libertad. He has not been called up to Ecuador's senior national team.
