About the player
Denys Marchenko answered with eight saves, as Ukraine beat Italy 1-0.
He is a product of Kyiv's own footballing pipeline rather than an outside signing. Marchenko played in the youth leagues for the Smena-Obolon school between 2020 and 2022, then moved into Obolon Kyiv's own youth ranks in 2023. His first-team debut came on 23 February 2025, away to Vorskla Poltava.
The path since has had its setbacks. In August 2024 he broke his arm and needed surgery, an injury that cost him a large part of that season and a place at the Under-20 World Cup in Chile. He returned to regular football for Obolon-Brovar, making nine appearances in the 2025/26 season before a collision in a match against Kryvbas in March 2026 left him with a dislocated finger and forced him off before the final whistle.
On 1 July 2026, Marchenko moved to Karpaty Lviv, a transfer reported by NinetyMinutesPlus at around €1m. He has made three appearances for his new club since, conceding once, and wears the number 1 shirt in Lviv.
At international level, Marchenko has two caps for Ukraine's Under-19 side, conceding once, and one for the Under-20s, in which he kept a clean sheet. He has yet to be called up to the senior national team.
