About the player
Gabriel Cortéz grew up in Esmeraldas and came through the youth ranks at Independiente del Valle. He broke into the first team there and stayed for five seasons, a run in which he scored 30 league goals in 134 appearances and also featured in the Copa Libertadores, scoring twice.
Cortéz has also worn the Ecuador shirt, debuting for the senior side in 2017. He made three appearances in total — two friendlies and one World Cup qualifier the following year — without scoring, after coming through Ecuador's youth setup at the Under-17 World Cup and the South American Under-20 Championship.
On 8 January 2026, Libertad Asunción announced his signing as a free agent. He has since made 19 appearances in the Paraguayan Primera División, scoring four goals, and played once in the Copa Sudamericana.
