Hugo Javier Martínez Cantero

On 15 July 2021, Hugo Martínez scored against Colombia's Atlético Junior in a Copa Sudamericana tie that Libertad won 4–3, a result that carried the Paraguayan side into the next round.

Martínez came through Libertad's academy in Asunción and signed his first professional contract there without a transfer fee. He made his senior debut on 30 October 2018 against Guaraní. Across those seasons Soccerway credits him with 131 league appearances, five in the Copa Paraguay and 25 in continental competition — the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana — for roughly 161 matches in all. His five goals in official competition split three in the league and two in the Libertadores.

He won three trophies at Libertad: the Copa Paraguay in 2019 and the Paraguayan championship in the Apertura tournaments of 2021 and 2022.

Martínez played one match for Paraguay's Olympic side in 2019. He made his full international debut on 2 September 2021 in a qualifier for the 2022 World Cup against Ecuador, and won two caps in total without scoring.

In 2025 he scored against Guaraní again, this time in the Paraguayan league, ending the opposition's winning run. On 3 July 2026 he left Libertad as a free agent, his contract expired, and joined the Chilean club Deportes Limache.
