About the player
José Abella came through the Santos Laguna academy, working his way from the club's Segunda División feeder side into the under-17 and under-20 sides before appearing at the 2012 Viareggio tournament with the youth team. He made his senior debut for Santos Laguna in the CONCACAF Champions League against Águila in September 2012, then followed with a Liga MX debut against Cruz Azul the following July.
At under-20 level he scored three goals in eleven appearances and won the CONCACAF championship in 2013, going on to represent Mexico at the U-20 World Cup in Turkey. He stayed involved with the under-23s, taking a silver medal at the 2015 Pan American Games and featuring twice at the Rio 2016 Olympics. He also made a single senior international appearance — a 2018 friendly defeat to the United States.
At club level, Abella spent the first phase of his career at Santos Laguna before a loan to Atlas in 2020 turned into a permanent move, where he stayed for three seasons. A spell at FC Juárez followed in 2024 before he returned to Santos Laguna, the club that developed him, in 2025.
