About the player
The number on his back at Benfica is 68. João Veloso spent the 2025/26 season appearing in the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira that Benfica won and picking up a handful of Primeira Liga minutes.
He arrived in Lisbon in 2017 from Albufeira, the club in the Algarve town where he was born, and the academy years brought a run of trophies. With the under-19s in 2021/22 he won the UEFA Youth League and the Portuguese under-19 championship, and added the FIFA U20 Intercontinental Cup in 2022. Around the same time he played five matches for Portugal's under-17s and scored three goals.
The step up came in 2024/25, when he moved into Benfica B in the Liga Portugal 2 and played 29 matches, with one goal, against Paços de Ferreira on 28 September 2024. That April he made his first-team debut in the Taça de Portugal against Tirsense. He was then named in Benfica's squad for the 2025 Club World Cup and played once, against Chelsea.
Portugal called him up to the under-21s for the first time in 2025, after earlier appearances at under-17 and under-20 level.
On 13 July 2026 Veloso joined Moreirense on loan until 30 June 2027.
