About the player
Number 40 has been the constant in Jan Paus-Kunšt's time at Istra 1961.
Born in Pula, he came through youth football on the Istrian coast rather than at a big-city academy. He played for NK Mladost Fažana from 2015 to 2017, then had a short spell at NK Medulin between February and July 2019, before joining the Istra 1961 academy for the 2019/20 season. In August 2020 he was promoted to the first-team squad.
The move up did not bring immediate senior football, and in 2021 the club sent him out on loan to NK Karlovac, then in the third tier's Centre group. That was where he got his first sustained run: ten league appearances in the 2021/22 season, with no cup games. He returned to Istra 1961 when the loan expired.
A second loan followed in July 2023, this time abroad, to the Slovenian side ND Triglav. It was brief — he was back at Istra 1961 by August of the same year.
He is Croatian, and holds no record of caps at any level: no senior international football and no listed call-ups to the Croatian youth sides. His surname points to Czech roots, but the Croatian Football Federation and the standard registries list him solely as a Croatian citizen, and he has never featured for a Czech national team.
His contract with Istra 1961 ran to 30 June 2025. At 193 cm he is among the taller goalkeepers on the club's books, and the bulk of his senior minutes to date remain those he picked up in Karlovac.
