Técnico Universitario's inability to register new players in recent seasons traced back, in part, to a ruling that had Juan David Jiménez Alvarado's name attached to it. FIFA sided with the Colombian midfielder in a dispute, ordering the Ecuadorian club to settle the debt with interest; when the money did not arrive, the federation barred Técnico Universitario from registering new signings.

Jiménez's path there began at home in Colombia, coming through the youth ranks at Bogotá and appearing for the club's Sub-20 side in 2011, though no record survives of his time in the first team.
