About the player
Walter Chávez was already in goal for Ecuador at international level before he had a place in a senior team to call his own. In 2011 he played in every match of that year's under-17 World Cup, appearing against Germany, Panama, Burkina Faso and Brazil, and he also travelled with the under-20 squad to that year's South American Championship, though mostly from the bench.
The step up to senior football came slowly. After several years with LDU Quito's reserve side, Chávez moved to Colón in 2015 and then, in 2017, joined Técnico Universitario as a free agent. He settled there for good, going on to make 199 league appearances. Técnico Universitario won nothing in that time, but in 2021 an internal fan poll named him the club's player of the year.
Individual moments stood out inside otherwise unremarkable results.
In June 2025, with his contract at Técnico Universitario ending, Chávez signed for Manta as a free agent through the end of 2026. He has never been capped by Ecuador's senior side.
