About the player
Kevin O'Toole's path to New York City FC ran through Princeton lecture halls as much as it did through academy training pitches. He joined the Red Bulls academy in 2015 and made his professional debut a year later with the club's USL Championship side, Red Bulls II, appearing 22 times and scoring once as the team lifted the USL Cup with a 5-1 win over Swope Park Rangers.
Rather than push straight into the MLS pipeline, O'Toole enrolled at Princeton, playing four seasons for the Tigers between 2017 and 2021. It was there that he built his scoring record, netting 15 goals in 58 appearances and earning Ivy League offensive player of the year honours twice, in 2018 and 2021.
NYCFC took him in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft with the 34th pick, and he signed for the club that March. His first-team debut came that October in the Campeones Cup against Mexican side Atlas, a match NYCFC won 2-0 to collect the trophy on O'Toole's first appearance. By November 2025 had made 80 appearances for the senior side. He also logged well over a hundred outings for the club's MLS Next Pro affiliate, NYCFC II.
Off the pitch, O'Toole's family history opened a different route in his career. His grandfather Eric emigrated from Dublin to the United States in the 1950s, and that lineage made O'Toole eligible for Irish citizenship. In November 2025, he received a call-up to the Republic of Ireland squad, adding an international dimension to a career built largely in New York.
