Leandro Barreiro Martins

Leandro Barreiro joined Benfica in the summer of 2024 as a free agent, leaving Mainz without a transfer fee changing hands, and signed a contract running to 30 June 2029.

He came through the Racing Union youth system in Luxembourg before moving on to Erpeldange 72, where he made his first-team debut in the Luxembourg second division in 2016. That same year Mainz brought him into their academy. He signed his first professional contract in November 2018, spent that season with the reserves in the Regionalliga, and made his Bundesliga debut on 8 February 2019. By the time he left, he had made 141 appearances in the German top flight.

His Benfica debut came on 11 August 2024, in the opening round of the Primeira Liga against Famalicão, a match Benfica lost 2-0. The first goal for his new club followed on 17 January 2025, also against Famalicão, when he scored in the 11th minute of a 4-0 win. He has since added the Taça da Liga and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira to his record with the club.

Barreiro has been a fixture for Luxembourg since his senior debut on 22 March 2018, a 1-0 win over Malta. He has gone on to win 73 caps and score twice for the national side, featuring in qualifying campaigns for the 2020 and 2024 European Championships and the 2022 and 2026 World Cups, as well as four editions of the UEFA Nations League and the 2026 Nations League play-offs.
