About the player
Manaka Hayashi's route to Chicago ran through three countries in three years. She started at INAC Kobe Leonessa in Japan's WE League in 2023, then crossed the Pacific the same year to join Oakland Soul in the USL Super League, where she scored a hat-trick against SF Glens across two seasons. Alongside her club football she also turned out for Santa Clara Broncos in NCAA competition, a season that earned her the West Coast Conference Rookie of the Year award.
Her clearest mark, though, has come with Japan's under-20 side. Hayashi captained the team through 11 appearances between 2022 and 2024, and led them to the final of the U-20 Women's World Cup in 2024, where Japan took silver.
She signed for Chicago Stars FC in 2025, arriving with a profile built on international leadership rather than volume of senior minutes — a captain's armband at youth level now set against the task of establishing herself in the NWSL.
