Mikayla Johnson

The moment that defines Micayla Johnson's early career came in January 2025, when Chicago Stars FC signed her to a three-year contract at 17, making her the youngest player ever to join the club. She had spent her teenage years with the Nationals Soccer academy in the Girls Academy circuit and later with the Michigan Hawks in the ECNL, collecting national titles and finishing as a top scorer at that level. A preseason spell training with Racing Louisville FC the previous year had already put professional coaches on notice.

Johnson made her NWSL debut on 14 March 2025 against Orlando Pride, and the goal followed later that year: on 5 October, she scored in a 2-2 draw with Utah Royals. By that point she had made 15 league appearances, still learning the rhythm of a competition far removed from the academy games she had dominated as a schoolgirl at Troy High School in Michigan.

Her rise has mirrored a string of call-ups for the United States at youth level. She scored regularly at every age group she passed through, from two goals in as many U-15 appearances to seven in fifteen matches for the U-17s, and was part of the squad that took bronze at the 2024 U-17 World Cup. Further caps followed with the U-19s.

At club level, adapting to the physical and tactical demands of the NWSL has been the next test after years of standing out against younger opposition. Chicago handed her early minutes as a left winger, betting on a player still a teenager to grow into a first-team role rather than waiting in the academy system. The first professional goal, against Utah Royals, marked the clearest sign yet that the transition was taking hold.
