About the player
Romario Caicedo's biggest goal did not come in a league match. On 24 July 2019, in the Copa Libertadores round of 16, the defender scored the second goal in the 79th minute as Emelec beat Flamengo 2-0.
Caicedo came through the youth ranks at CD Olmedo, joining their under-20 side in 2010 before moving up through the reserve team and into the first team, where he stayed until 2015. A brief spell at Fuerza Amarilla followed in 2016 before he signed for Emelec in 2017. He won the Ecuadorian Serie A title with Emelec that same year. His full international debut came on 27 July 2017, in a friendly against Trinidad and Tobago that Ecuador won 3-1.
Not everything ran smoothly. In October 2017 he missed a match against Macará because of an allergic reaction, reportedly to pineapple. According to futbolecuador.com, his relationship with Emelec broke down far more seriously between 2025 and 2026, when a dispute over unpaid wages led him to file a formal complaint against the club. Emelec responded by sidelining him, and there were reports the club had tried to alter his contract to remove an automatic renewal clause. Despite the friction, Caicedo turned down a move to Chile's Universidad Católica, choosing to stay at Emelec. In 2026 he eventually left to join Guayaquil City FC.
